A Bite That Means More Than We Think

The Story of the Dog Biscuit

Today, we take it for granted that our dog has its own biscuits, its own treats, its own diet. But it wasn’t always this way. The history of the dog biscuit is, in many ways, the history of the relationship between humans and dogs.

🐺 The first “treat”: leftovers

Tens of thousands of years ago, dogs (then still wolves) lived near human settlements. In exchange for cooperation, they received food.
This was the first reinforcement.

The first industrial dog biscuit

The modern dog biscuit was born around 1860, when James Spratt created the first packaged dog food in London under the name Spratt’s Patent Dog Cakes.

The ingredients were simple:

  • wheat flour
  • vegetables / beetroot
  • beef blood
  • meat industry by-products

It was a hard, dry biscuit with a long shelf life. The goal was not training or enjoyment — but practicality. It was the first time a dog received a separate, dedicated food product.

The birth of the treat

In the early 20th century, behavioral psychology transformed dog training.
The theory of positive reinforcement was established by researchers such as Edward Thorndike and later B. F. Skinner.

At this point, food became a conscious motivational tool.
A treat was no longer just nutrition — it became communication.

The 21st century: awareness and value choices

Over the past 15–20 years, new questions have emerged:

  • What exactly is in it?
  • Where do the ingredients come from?
  • Is it human-grade?
  • Is it sustainable?

The market responded with:

  • short ingredient lists
  • functional treats
  • the grain-free trend
  • upcycled ingredients
  • environmentally friendly packaging

The focus shifted from survival to value.

And today?

Today, a bite can be pure calories. It can be marketing. Or it can be a conscious choice.

Your dog may not know what sustainability means. But they feel when you pay attention. And perhaps the story of the dog biscuit ultimately comes down to this:

How a fallen crumb became a choice.

Fun facts – things you might not have known

🐾 The first industrial dog biscuit was not designed as a treat, but as complete food.
🐾 In the 19th century, beef blood was considered a completely natural source of protein. Today, it would be a marketing disaster — back then, it was innovation.
🐾 The scientific theory of positive reinforcement was developed decades after the invention of the dog biscuit itself.
🐾 The world’s first branded dog food preceded many innovations in the human food industry.
🐾 The word “treat” is a modern concept. In the past, they were simply called “dog cakes.”
